One killed in officer-involved shooting on Sybil Drive, police say

LAFAYETTE, La. (KLFY) -- One person was killed in an officer-involved shooting after an officer who was responding to a burglary in progress was struck by a suspect vehicle, according to the Lafayette Police Department.

The incident, which occurred around 3:30 a.m. in the 100 block of Sybil Drive, is now being investigated by the Louisiana State Police Criminal Investigations Division.

State police said the shooting claimed the life of 27-year-old Rigoberto Sanchez of Lafayette.

Lafayette police said in a news release that officers responded to the area about a residential burglary in process. When they arrived, police said the suspect vehicle was seen in the immediate area.

"As officers approached the suspect vehicle, the suspect vehicle proceeded to accelerate towards a responding officer. The suspect vehicle subsequently struck a responding officer," Lafayette police said.

"Shortly after being struck by the suspect vehicle, an LPD officer discharged their LPD issued firearm at the suspect vehicle," Lafayette police continued.

As a result of the shooting, one person was pronounced dead at the scene.

The officer who shot their weapon will be placed on paid administrative leave per the Lafayette Police Department's protocol, Lafayette police said.

State police said their detectives were called around 4 a.m. Saturday to investigate the incident.

In a Saturday afternoon update, state police provided the following information:

The preliminary investigation revealed that shortly after 3:00 a.m., an officer with the Lafayette Police Department responded to a burglary complaint on Sybil Drive. While conducting the investigation, the officer located a suspect vehicle at a nearby residence. As the officer approached the vehicle on foot, the vehicle moved toward the officer. During the encounter, the officer discharged their service weapon, striking the driver who was later identified as Sanchez.

State police said the Lafayette Police Officer involved in the incident suffered minor injuries.
