Red Sox Reinstate Trevor Story Ahead Of White Sox Matchup

Trevor Story officially returned to the Red Sox roster Saturday.

Boston announced in a press release Saturday that it reinstated Story from the 60-day injured list. To make room on the active roster, catcher and infielder Mickey Gasper was optioned to Triple-A Worcester. The Red Sox also announced they recalled right-handed pitcher Isaiah Campbell from the WooSox and placed him on the 60-day injured list with right elbow inflammation.

Story underwent what was believed to be season-ending shoulder surgery in April. The 31-year-old made strides last month when he fielded ground balls and took swings at batting practice before beginning his rehab assignment in Worcester. Story, manager Alex Cora and chief baseball officer Craig Breslow each expressed confidence in a return before the end of the season, and he's expected to start against the Chicago White Sox at Fenway Park on Saturday.

Cora told reporters Friday that Cedddanne Rafaela would shift to second base for the remainder of the season along with his center-field role. He's spent time working with the coaching staff on the position change, which the 23-year-old was open to.

Gasper played 10 games for the Red Sox and made his MLB debut on Aug. 12. The Merrimack, N.H. native went 0-for-12 in his Boston run.

Campbell pitched eight games for the Red Sox and 14 games with Triple-A Worcester. He recorded a 16.20 ERA in 6 2/3 innings with Boston with six strikeouts and owns a 2.20 ERA in 16 1/3 innings with the WooSox.

First pitch for Boston-Chicago on Saturday is scheduled at 7:15 p.m. ET on FOX.
