Republicans demand expanded investigations into Afghanistan withdrawal ahead of elections

According to the Washington Post, Republicans are intensifying their investigations into the U.S. withdrawal from Afghanistan as the American elections approach.

Sources reveal that Donald Trump is aiming to make this issue a central theme of his campaign.

The Washington Post reported on September 7 that the Republican Party, especially the House Foreign Affairs Committee, is seeking more testimonies about Biden’s handling of the Afghanistan exit.

The Foreign Affairs Committee, expected to complete its investigation by now, is increasing efforts to question key Biden administration figures such as Secretary of State Antony Blinken and National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan.

However, Pentagon spokesperson James Adams admitted, “We are not aware of any formal congressional requests for additional testimonies from them or other military personnel.”

Speaking anonymously, an assistant to the Foreign Affairs Committee stated that investigators are reviewing officers’ responses and may request further participation from them.

White House spokesperson Sharon Young noted that the administration has cooperated with the investigation by making senior officials available, providing briefings to lawmakers, and releasing extensive documents related to the withdrawal.

The Republican-led House’s plan to extend and broaden its investigation coincides with Donald Trump preparing for a debate against his Democratic rival Kamala Harris.

Meanwhile, Michael McCaul, Chairman of the Foreign Affairs Committee, is expected to release a report by Monday condemning the Biden-Harris team’s handling of the withdrawal.

Democrats on the committee are anticipated to respond with a report defending the current administration, while an independent evaluation has highlighted Trump’s exit agreement as a major factor in Afghanistan’s collapse.
