Suspect in Melissa Jubane's murder previously worked at different Providence hospital: Officials

PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) -- Authorities announced overnight Saturday they arrested a man in connection with the murder of a Providence nurse who was reported missing after not appearing at work earlier this week.

Beaverton police say the suspect in the death of Melissa Jubane is 27-year-old Beaverton resident Bryce Johnathan Schubert. Schubert was immediately described by investigators as a neighbor of Jubane, who lived at an apartment complex on 1050 SW 160th Ave. in Beaverton, and was arrested Friday evening after "an extensive investigation" determined he had been involved in her disappearance.

Booking information lists a charge of murder in the second degree. Jubane's remains have been recovered as well, according to police. It's unclear at this time when he will face a judge or whether he has an attorney.

A spokesperson for Providence confirmed to KOIN 6 News that Schubert had been "briefly employed" as a Providence Portland Medical Center nurse from September 2022 to October 2023. It's unclear what led to his leaving the hospital system in October 2023.

Jubane had been a nurse at Providence St. Vincent Medical Center, and Providence stated he had not been employed there.

In a statement, Providence expressed its condolences to Jubane's loved ones.

"Our hearts are broken at the news of the death of our Providence St. Vincent nurse and colleague, Melissa Jubane. This comes as a shock to us all and she is mourned by her co-workers. Melissa was an exceptional nurse, committed to our Providence Mission and daily demonstrating our values of compassion, excellence and integrity," the statement said. "We stand in support of her loved ones and those who worked so closely with Melissa. We appreciate all the expressions of concern from the community. Melissa was a person of Providence, and we will miss her."
