CORONATION Street left fans fuming as they insisted a budding romance was ‘ruined’.

Viewers had hoped Carla Connor (Alison King) and DS Lisa Swain (Vicky Myers) could be the latest pairing.

However, the moment was swiftly broken up by Lisa’s daughter Betsy[/caption]

However, scenes in Friday’s (September 6) appeared to dash this desire.

Lisa stepped in to thwart villain Joel Deering (Calum Lill), who was threatening Carla in Underworld.

As Carla revealed her struggles, Lisa offered comfort by putting a hand on her elbow.

However, the policewoman’s teenage daughter Betsy (Sydney Martin) – who’s had problems with Carla – walked in and didn’t like what she saw.

After Betsy ran off, her mother later found her and explained: “I had my hand on Carla’s arm, it was a comforting hand! Carla’s straight!”

However, the younger Swain replied: “Yeah, and so is spaghetti until you boil it!”

Afterwards, Betsy proceeded to tell about the hit and run at the Precinct, which Carla was responsible for.

Although viewers were happy to see romantic potential – they later fumed Betsy had “ruined” the pair’s chemistry.

One wrote on X: “Can’t believe Betsy just ruined what was gonne 100% be a moment there!”

Another fumed: “Betsy nooo we deserved a long scene!”

A third fan agreed: “Great timing, Betsy. Great.”

While a fourth penned: “Betsy thinks it was more than [friends] and so do we!

“Then to ruin any chance of a relationship the little brat tells her mum about Carla hitting a boy then driving off!”

Other fans, meanwhile, were left wondering about the Swain’s family history.

Most complained about soap storylines

Over the years, all three of the main soaps have featured plots that have had even die-hard fans reaching for their phones and laptops so they can get in touch with Ofcom and complain. Here are just some of the most scandalous…

  • EastEnders baby theft: 13,400 Ofcom complaints – Back in 2011, EastEnders was flooded with complaints when Ronnie Branning (RIP) swapped her baby for the dead son of Kat Moon. The storyline drew the most number of objections in the soap’s long history and saw it roundly criticised by campaigners – with 13,400 flying in over the course of the storyline. Some viewers called it “distressing” and “horrific” but Ofcom ruled the scenes were not “unduly disturbing”.
  • Emmerdale dog-napping: 550 Ofcom complaints – Back in 2016, Ross Barton and Charity Dingle came up with a plan to steal a dog and hold it ransom – but viewers didn’t like it one bit. The nation’s pet owners rose up, insisting the storyline would encourage copycats (not to mention copydogs). Complaints over two episodes totalled a staggering 550 and soap writers quickly learnt you don’t mess with animal-lovers.
  • Coronation Street double murder: 546 Ofcom complaints – Marginally less people complained about a gruesome double murder than objected to a dog-napping plot when Pat Phelan was at the centre of a spate of killings. First he forced Andy Carver to shoot dead Vinny Ashford – and then Pat killed Andy. All the bloodshed back in 2017 proved to be too much for some viewers, who lodged complaints in vast numbers about the “violent scenes”.
  • One speculated: “I think Betsy thinks Carla is trying to replace her other mum who died.”

While another chimed in: “Why am I so invested in the Swain family?

“I want to know more about Lisa’s wife Becky. How did she die? Which mum had Betsy? I’m fully into this.”

Coronation Street airs on ITV and is available on ITVX.
