European city less than an hour from the UK reveals plans for brand new lido

A CITY less than an hour from the UK has revealed plans for a brand new lido in the middle of the centre.

The Dublin City Lido project launched in 2020, with designs for an outdoor swimming pool complex at George’s Dock.

The pool would be heated, so would be an all-season attraction.

It would also open to both beginner swimmers and those more advanced.

On-site would be “multiple” pools for each levels, as well as have a green space and leisure facility including a sauna.

Images presented to Dublin City Councillers show three pools, one with designated swimming lanes that would be an “Olympic-scale 50-metre” pool.

Tiered seating as well as benches would line the edge as well, along with a cafe and community space.

The campaign has hit just €8,547, of it’s €20,000 goal.

If it goes ahead, the plans could cost as much as €25million to build.

It comes after plans for a white-water rafting attraction for the same area were scrapped.

Campaign spokesman Patrick Earls told local media: “”Initially we thought that, you know, it would be a great idea to create something ambitious, and an outdoor swimming facility would be ideally suited to this site.”

“There has been huge support among councillors, local TD’s, community members, local businesses, large corporations, swimming bodies, polo clubs, and Dubliners and citizens across the country.”

If it gets the go-ahead, it would be the the only outdoor heated swimming pool in Dublin that’s open to the public.

The campaign cited other success stories of lidos, including ones in the UK such as London Fields lido.

Until it gets the go-ahead, there is loads to do in Dublin.

One of the most popular attractions is the Guinness Storehouse, which was named the best tourist attraction in Europe last year in the Europe’s Leading Tourist Attraction 2023 awards.

if you fancy another tipple, then head over to the much-loved Temple Bar pub for a late night on the town.

It’s also worth popping to see the 16th century Trinity College, home to a stunning library, as well as EPIC, The Irish Emigration Museum.

Swimming safety advice

Experts have revealed some of their top advice for both adults and kids heading to the water this summer:

How to stay safe at the beach

Gareth Morrison, Head of Water Safety at the RNLI said: “If you find yourself being swept out to sea in a rip, try to relax and float until you are free from the rip and you can then swim to safety.

“If you see someone else in danger, alert a lifeguard or call 999 or 112 and ask for the Coastguard.”

How to stay safe at the swimming pool

Tiny Hearts Education, former paramedic and CEO Nikki Jurcutz said: “Always put your little one in bright or contrasting colours that would be easy to find in an emergency.

“It only takes 20 seconds to drown, little tips like this could save a life”.

An Auqabliss spokesperson added: “Swimming toys such as noodles, dive rings, floaties and beach balls can be dangerous if left in the pool.

Children may try to grab these from the pool’s edge and fall in.”

How to stay safe at a waterpark

Ali Beckman, Puddle Ducks Technical Director, said: “Never send a child down the slide on their own, not only are they going to be entering the slide pool area independently, they then have to exit the pool and wait for an adult.

“And wave pools should be avoided until your child is really confident with water going over their faces and you know they are able to regain their feet independently.

Waterparks are often very busy places and it’s easy to lose sight of a child in a split second.”
