Major Temperature Record Falls at Death Valley National Park

It was officially the hottest meteorological summer (June–August) on record in Death Valley National Park, trouncing previous highs set just a few years ago. 

According to a press release from the park, Death Valley saw "an average 24-hour temperature of 104.5°F (40.3°C)." The previous record of 104.2°F (40.1°C), set in 2021 and 2018.

This record includes the hottest month in Death Valley's recorded history, set at the Furnace Creek weather station in July. During that month, Death Valley reached 125°F (51.7°C) for nine consecutive days, including a high of 129.2°F (54°C) on July 7. 

Meanwhile, average lows were just 91.9°F (33.3°C), providing little respite in the desert environment. On nine nights this summer, the low didn't fall below 100°F. The high temperatures caused a series of emergencies, including two deaths and an incident where a visitor's skin melted off his feet after he lost his shoes in the hot sand. 

According to the press release, triple-digit temperatures are expected to continue through October of this year.
