Aluskin Chair
Aluskin Chair is a minimal chair created by Cologne-based designer Carsten in der Elst for Max Radford Gallery. At the heart of Carsten’s philosophy lies a reverence for industrial by-products and a commitment to preserving the visible imprints of creation within his finished pieces. This approach serves as both a testament to the materials’ origins and a celebration of the manufacturing process itself. In the four years since establishing his practice, Carsten has immersed himself in the realm of furniture design, guided by a hands-on ethos and an unwavering respect for his chosen media. His creations are not mere objects, but narratives born from an intimate dialogue with the very essence of their components. Each piece tells a story of origin, process, and transformation. The chair before us, an evolution of Carsten’s acclaimed Aluskin series, stands as a paragon of his commitment to zero-waste design. Crafted from aluminum panels – cast-off skins salvaged from high-precision aluminum production facilities – this piece embodies the designer’s philosophy in its purest form. The chair’s dimensions and form are not imposed upon the material, but rather emerge organically from it, a physical manifestation of Carsten’s belief in allowing the inherent properties of the medium to guide the creative journey.
