Phones seized from NYPD officials in investigation into alleged nightlife corruption: sources

NEW YORK (PIX11) – Federal investigators seized the phones of several members of the NYPD on Wednesday, including Police Commissioner Edward Caban, in an investigation led by the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of New York.

Federal agents asked Caban to surrender his cellphones, along with six other NYPD officials who work closely with the police commissioner. They include Caban's chief of staff Raul Pintos, two precinct commanders, a lieutenant, and two detectives who work on Caban’s detail.

The feds are looking into the department's quality-of-life initiatives and enforcement, specifically allegations of nightlife corruption, sources told PIX11 News.

The police commissioner’s two brothers, Richard and his twin James, are both in the nightlife industry. They are part of the investigation as well, sources said.

Commissioner Caban and the others have not been accused of a crime or any wrongdoing. 

A spokesperson for the NYPD said the department is fully cooperating with the investigation.
