DEC hosts volunteer opportunities this Saturday

ALBANY, N.Y. (NEWS10)-- The Department of Enviornmental Conservation is hosting its first ever Adirondack and Catskill Park Day, on Saturday, Sept. 7. The day will include various stewardship events throughout both the Catskill Mountains and the Adirondack mountains for public participation.

Each event will have a different project. From gardening to cleaning campgrounds to fixing fences, participants of all ages are welcome. However, all programs do require volunteer registration for safety purposes, through Parks & Trails NY.

These are the stewardship events being held on Saturday

Adirondack Mountains, Essex and Warren Counties:

  • Adirondack Interpretive Center, 10 a.m. to 12 p.m.
    • Clean up the wildflower gardens and trail edges.
  • Adirondack Rail Trail, 8 a.m. to 12 p.m.
    • Clear coating and treat the cut ends and top surfaces of new timber rail fences along the Rail Trail.
  • Lake Harris Campground and Day Use Area, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
    • Campground raking and facility cleanup
  • Rogers Rock Campground and Day Use Area, 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.
    • Facility raking and cleanup, staining and painting campground

Catskill Mountains, Delaware and Greene Counties:

  • Big Pond, 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.
    • Join Catskill Mountainkeeper's Trail Stewards for a seasonal walk and clean-up of the Big Pond campsites and recreation areas.
  • Kaaterskill Falls, 10:30 a.m. to 3 p.m.
    • Meet with Catskill Center Stewards and help clean up the area-- gloves, trash bags and pickers will be available.
