Manhattan volunteers giving shoes to school kids for 9/11 remembrance

MANHATTAN (KSNT) - The Riley County Police Department (RCPD) shared that community volunteers will be giving shoes to elementary students as part of a 9/11 remembrance event this weekend.

On Sunday, Sept. 8 the Flint Hills Volunteer Center will host '9/11 Day of Remembrance' to honor those who serve and protect at Manhattan City Park. Volunteers and first responders will give 400 pairs of shoes to kids in grades K-5. The RCPD will also host a free picnic for the first 250 guests inside the park pavilion.

"In 2002, family members of those killed and injured on 9/11 joined with first responders and others to create “9/11 Day” to annually and forever encourage all Americans to remember and pay tribute on the anniversary of the September 11, 2001, attacks through acts of service, including volunteerism, and to keep Americans’ promise to 'Never Forget,'" the RCPD wrote on social media.

Attendees can also check out a display with an EOD bomb robot and suit, a military police display, patrol cars and various pieces of equipment from local first responder agencies.
