‘Hard to breathe’ – Lucas Bergvall explains his on-field choking incident in pre-season

Lucas Bergvall has had a promising start to life at Tottenham, but there was one incident in pre-season that had onlookers worried for a moment, as he appeared to be choking on the pitch in the friendly against Bayern Munich. Now, the player himself has explained what happened.

No big deal for Bergvall

Despite signing for Spurs in January, fans had to wait six months to see him in action for the club, but when he finally joined up with Ange Postecoglou‘s squad in the summer, it did not take long for Bergvall to settle in.

A number of impressive pre-season displays have put Bergvall in a strong position in Postecoglou’s squad and the teenager is expected to feature fairly regularly this season.

But, in one of those pre-season games against Bayern Munich, Bergvall spent some time on the ground, appeared to be choking, and had to have the medical staff hit his back to dislodge some kind of blockage from his throat.

Speaking to Aftonbladet about the incident, Bergvall said: “First my boot broke completely. It just opened. I took a caffeine chewing gum to get started a bit after that. I forgot to take out the gum and it went into my throat. It was hard to breathe.

“It never felt like there was anything dangerous. It was more a little uncomfortable. I tried to bring it up, but I was calm. It looked a little worse than it was and felt.”

What is the gum?

Expanding on the caffeine gum he mentioned, Bergvall explained why he uses it and what it does exactly.

He added: “It was a little uncomfortable. It was a little hard to breathe. That was probably what caused a slight panic.

“[I took the gum] to get a little extra boost. It’s probably a bit of a placebo effect too. I use it a little now and then, if I might feel a little more tired some days. If you want a little extra energy, but it’s not something I want to get used to. As I said, it’s probably mostly a placebo thing.”

Spurs Web Opinion

It’s good to hear that the situation was not as bad as it looked from the sidelines and that he’s all good now. I can’t wait to see Bergvall get a proper run in the team at some point, as I think he is going to absolutely excel in this team.
