Journalist says Spurs were on the receiving end of the ‘biggest donation’ this summer

European football expert James Horncastle is shocked at the fee AC Milan paid for Emerson Royal, suggesting in his latest column that the Serie A club have charitably donated to Tottenham’s coffers.

Emerson swapped Spurs for AC Milan

The writing was always on the wall for Emerson in the summer transfer window, with the right-back evidently not part of Ange Postecoglou’s plans.

It did not come as a surprise when the defender eventually sealed a permanent move to the San Siro, with the Lilywhites getting a fee of £13m (TNT Sports) from the Rossoneri for the Brazilian.

Emerson has not had the easiest of starts to life at Milan, having struggled in his debut against Parma as well as his first start against Lazio.

Milan played out a 2-2 draw with the capital club last Sunday, with both goals coming from the former Tottenham man’s side, with the right-back coming in for a lot of criticism from the Italian press (MilanNews).

£12.6m donation for Tottenham Hotspur

Horncastle has become the latest to pile on, questioning how Milan saw it fit to pay the fee that did for Emerson.

The journalist wrote in The Athletic: “Milan keep conceding the same goal too, down Emerson Royal’s side.

“His €15million (£12.6m) signing from Tottenham Hotspur looks like the biggest donation in the history of Fondazione Milan as the club charitably tries to make his wish to become a footballer come true.”

Spurs Web Opinion

This sort of piling on is completely unwarranted, given that Emerson has made just one start for Milan.

I am confident that the Brazilian will turn this around and go on to be an important player for Paulo Fonseca’s men this season as the pace of the Serie A will suit him.
