With Steelers QB Russell Wilson questionable, ex-Bear Justin Fields could start opener

The Bears are rooting for Justin Fields this season, and not just because they like him. If Fields plays 51% of the Steelers' offensive snaps this season, the sixth-round pick the Bears got for him will convert to a fourth-rounder.

And now that starter Russell Wilson is listed as questionable with a calf injury after being limited again in practice Friday, Fields could start the Steelers' season opener Sunday against the Falcons in his hometown.

Wilson gave no clarity on his status Friday and said, “I’m trying to get my body ready to go and rock and roll. Just doing everything we can.”

Fields knew when he arrived in Pittsburgh that Wilson was the favorite to land the starting job, but made clear he was fighting to take it from him.

“I’m definitely competing — Russ knows that,” Fields said. “Him being out there helps me get better. We’re pushing each other. I definitely don’t have the mindset of me just sitting all year.”

Fields completed 19 of 27 passes for 199 yards and a 91.4 passer rating in the preseason.
