Pakistani authorities have reported a case of polio in Islamabad after 16 years. With this new case, the total number of polio cases identified in Pakistan this year has risen to 17.

The Pakistan National Health Organization announced that environmental samples taken in June this year from Islamabad and Rawalpindi showed the presence of the polio virus.

Ayesha Raza Farooq, the Prime Minister’s Advisor on Polio Eradication, stated, “Unfortunately, this disease continues to claim victims among children in Pakistan.”

According to Pakistani health organizations, since the beginning of this year, 12 polio cases have been reported from Balochistan, three from Sindh, and two from Punjab.

Meanwhile, Anwarul Haq, coordinator of the National Emergency Operations Center for Polio in Pakistan, said, “We are accelerating efforts to vaccinate all children in Pakistan.”

Previously, a case of polio was reported in Sindh province on April 2 of this year.

Pakistani officials have announced that next month, a vaccination campaign will start simultaneously on both sides of the border between Pakistan and Afghanistan.

This decision was made after 12 new cases of polio were reported in border areas between Pakistan and Afghanistan in recent months.

Pakistan and Afghanistan are among the few countries in the world where polio remains a persistent issue.

As Pakistan and Afghanistan continue their fight against polio, international cooperation and sustained vaccination efforts are crucial to eliminate this debilitating disease and protect future generations.
