Cyprus sees growth in jobs, work hours

Employment in Cyprus increased by 2.1 per cent in the second quarter of 2024, with both the number of people employed and the total hours worked showing growth.

According to provisional estimates released on Friday by the Cyprus Statistical Service (Cystat), total employment for the period is estimated at 484,308 persons, with 434,770 being employees and 49,538 classified as self-employed.

The service reported that this marks a year-on-year increase of 2.1 per cent compared to the same quarter in 2023.

Notably, the most significant percentage increases were recorded in education, administrative and supporting service activities, transportation and storage, human health and social work activities, and accommodation and food service activities. 

Moreover, the number of hours worked also saw a rise. The actual hours worked for the second quarter of 2024 are estimated at 223,299 thousand, reflecting a 2.3 per cent increase compared to the same period in 2023. 

Similar to employment growth, the largest increases in hours worked were seen in the sectors of education, administrative and supporting service activities, accommodation and food services, and transportation and storage.
