Chiefs win season opener against Ravens by a toe

KANSAS CITY (KSNT) - The first game of the 2024 NFL season between the Kansas City Chiefs and the Baltimore Ravens did not disappoint.

The game started with a brief weather delay, but action at Arrowhead Stadium in Kansas City wasn't on standby for too long.

Baltimore got on the board first, with running back Derrick Henry busting up the middle in the first quarter for his first touchdown as a Raven. The Chiefs responded quickly, with rookie first-round draft pick Xavier Worthy scoring his first NFL touchdown on the next drive.

The teams traded field goals, leaving the Chiefs with a 13-10 lead at halftime.

Kansas City opened up the second half with more scoring, a downfield pass from Patrick Mahomes to Rashee Rice set up an Isiah Pacheco touchdown, extending the Chiefs' lead to 20-10.

Baltimore responded with a touchdown, but Mahomes and Worthy kept them at bay with another touchdown, Worthy's second of the night. The Ravens added a field goal with just under five minutes to play to creep back in, making it 27-20.

With the clock winding down, Lamar Jackson and the Ravens drove down to the Chiefs' 10 yard line, following a 38-yard connection from Jackson to Rashod Bateman. That connection set up the final play of the game, a pass from Jackson to Isaiah Likely in the back of the end zone.

The catch was originally ruled a touchdown, which would have made the score 27-26, giving the Ravens a chance to tie the game with a field goal or win outright with a two point conversion. After an official review revealed Likely's toe was touching the white line at the back of the end zone, the call on the field was reversed, giving the Chiefs a 27-20 victory.

Kansas City is now 1-0 on the season. The Chiefs host the Cincinnati Bengals in their next game, on Sunday, Sept. 15.
