Pundit thinks Spurs player will continue to be ‘exposed’ in Postecoglou’s system

Romania star Florin Gardos is of the opinion that Ange Postecoglou’s extremely high line will not work in the Premier League, insisting that Radu Dragusin will be exposed if the Australian persists with it.

Radu Dragusin got his first start of the season

Dragusin came into the lineup for his first start of the season at St James’ Park after Micky van de Ven was ruled out with an injury.

The 22-year-old did deliver an accomplished and solid display overall but he looked troubled when the ball was played in behind the Spurs backline for the pacy Newcastle forwards to run onto, with the centre-back making a couple of last-ditch tackles.

However, he cannot be blamed for either of the goals that Tottenham conceded, with his defensive partner Cristian Romero vacating his space for the home side’s opener, leaving Harvey Barnes unmarked.

Postecoglou’s tactics are called into question

Gardos has laid the blame squarely on Postecoglou for the loss, suggesting that the high line was suicidal in the lead-up to Newcastle’s winner.

The former Southampton man told Digispor about Alexander Isak’s goal: “That’s why I’m not a fan of Postecoglou and I don’t think he’ll (Dragusin) have any notable performances. Joelinton has the ball a few meters from the centre circle and Tottenham’s back line is in midfield.

“You can have Usain Bolt on defence, he still doesn’t get to those kinds of balls. It’s a pity for Dragusin, he played well, but if something doesn’t change he will be exposed in every match.”

Spurs Web Opinion

The one thing that is undisputed is that we look extremely vulnerable at the back as soon as our first line of press is broken.

Playing such a high line with no pressure on the ball can be suicidal unless Spurs have the pace of Van de Ven to bail them out.
