Missing Brit’s trousers & one of his trainers found after he was swept away & girlfriend died in Majorca storm
THE body of a missing British hiker has been found after he and his girlfriend were swept away by floods in Majorca.
The Civil Guard found the 32-year-old male’s trousers and a trainer.
It comes after his girlfriend, 26, was found earlier in the week after a flash flood in Majorca swept the couple away.
Police divers are expected to take the lead as they try to find the body in a flooded canyon in the Tramuntana mountain range called the Torrent de Pareis, in Majorca.
The two Brit tourists were hiking with another group of hikers along a path by the a river running through the mountains when the torrential rain hit.
The search for the pair began on Tuesday evening after other members of a group they were with that had to be rescued by the Civil Guard.
Juan Carlos Rodriguez, head of the Civil Guard’s specialist mountain rescue Greim team which has been leading and coordinating the search, confirmed the grim discovery of items of clothing matching those of the 32-year-old man.
A Civil Guard spokesman said before clothing belonging to the British male hiker was discovered: “The search operation was resumed first thing with specialist Civil Guard divers joining the operation.
“Air and land resources were employed by the Civil Guard. Several teams of firefighters were also mobilised.”
Relatives of the pair, who were holidaying in Majorca, are being assisted by psychologists.
Sources from the Guardia Civil reported that the group that went into the mountain and lacked the necessary equipment and clothing.
A police officer attached to the search operation said: “We are tired of taking tourists in flip-flops out of the torrent, who think it’s a stroll when in reality it’s a very demanding route, which you have to do with the right equipment.”
Parts of the island had been affected by severe flooding following heavy rain.
Earlier in the week, the Civil Guard, which mobilised mountain rescue experts, said: “The Civil Guard rescued 10 people who were trapped in the Torrent de Pareis by a torrent of water.
“Our Greim unit established an operation throughout the day there to prevent possible accidents involving hikers who were in the area given the forecast of heavy rain.
“Given the experiences of previous years, when many visitors ignore weather conditions and end up getting trapped by high water, the decision was taken to establish precautionary measures.
“Thanks to this operation, and with the help of a Civil Guard helicopter, officers were able to save the lives of 10 people who were trapped, without protective clothing, and completely soaked.”
The rescued walkers, two Spaniards and the rest French, German and British, later told cops that two members of a group of five “had been swept away by a torrent of water and they had been unable to do anything to save them and didn’t know where they were.”
The torrent is a riverbed that can be hiked during the dry months but is often affected by flash floods as it collects a large amount of rainwater that falls on the mountain and funnels it down this narrow valley.
The Torrent de Pareis, a UNESCO World Heritage site, is regarded as one of the most scenic and well-known day walks in Majorca.
It follows a deep canyon some four miles long starting from the Lluc area at the heart of the Serra de Tramuntana all the way to the sea where it opens onto a beautiful sandy beach in the bay of Sa Calobra.
Hikers wishing to start the walk start at a place called Escorca, on the Ma-10 road that connects Pollensa with Soller.
Visitors are warned the canyon can be flooded at times and urged to take care.
