No repeat final stint as wheelchair racer Jerrold Mangliwan concludes Paralympics

MANILA, Philippines – A slow start doomed Filipino wheelchair racer Jerrold Mangliwan as he concluded his campaign in the Paris Paralympics.

The 44-year-old veteran missed the final of the men’s 100m T52 after placing sixth and last in his heat at the Stade de France on Thursday, September 5 (Friday, September 6, Manila time).

Mangliwan clocked 19.44 seconds as he suffered an early exit from the event where he placed eighth overall in the Tokyo Paralympics three years ago.

Only the top three from each of the two heats and the next two fastest advanced to the final.

Japan’s Tomoki Sato topped the heat with a time of 17.20 seconds, while Canada’s Anthony Bouchard (17.43) and Mexico’s Salvador Hernandez Mondragon (17.45) completed the top three.

Belgium’s Maxime Carabin, who is eyeing another golden finish after ruling the men’s 400m T52, posted the fastest time in the heats with 16.21 seconds followed by Great Britain’s Marcus Perrineau Daley (16.87).

Mexico’s Leonardo de Jesus Perez Juarez (17.57) and Japan’s Tomoya Ito (17.58) and Tatsuya Ito (17.76) made the final as well.

Just like para swimmer Ernie Gawilan, Mangliwan — who hails from Tabuk, Kalinga — represented the country for a third straight Paralympics.

Mangliwan also competed in the men’s 400 T52, where he reached the final and placed eighth.

He is the fourth Filipino to exit the Paralympics after Gawilan, para archer Agustina Bantiloc, and para taekwondo jin Allain Ganapin.

Para swimmer Angel Otom and para javelin thrower Cendy Asusano are still in the running as the Philippines hopes to capture a third medal in Paralympic history. – Rappler.com
