Mariners Game #141 Preview: 9/5/2024
one more time
The Mariners history with the Oakland Coliseum is a long one.
When the A’s moved to Oakland from Kansas City after the 1967 season, senator Stuart Symington wanted another team in KC so badly that he threatened MLB’s anti-trust legislation. His threat worked, and MLB awarded KC a new franchise in the next round of expansion. And at the same time it offered one to the emerald city of Seattle. That team was the Pilots, who, of course, fled to Milwaukee after just one year.
But Seattleites wanted an MLB team so badly, that they broke ground on the Kingdome without either an MLB or NFL team. And they used that stadium and a threat of another lawsuit to force MLB to give Seattle a new team.
And today that team will play its last game in the Oakland Coliseum. So even though the ballpark is old and slightly ugly and maybe falling apart, in a weird way we can thank it for the existence of the M’s themselves.

And it’s fitting that today’s starter for the M’s will be Bryan Woo, who was born in Oakland and grew up in the bay area. This will be Woo’s third start in Oakland, and across 11 innings he has yet to allow a run in the Coliseum. Growing up a Giants fan, maybe no earned runs across three starts will be his contribution to the bay bridge rivalry.
