Mets Activate J.D. Martinez; Claim José Azócar Off Waivers
The New York Mets announced a series of roster moves on Thursday. Veteran designated hitter J.D. Martinez has been activated off the paternity list and outfielder DJ Stewart was optioned to Triple-A Syracuse in the corresponding move.
The Mets also added an outfielder to the 40-man roster when they claimed José Azócar off waivers from the Padres. To make room on the 40-man, the Mets moved right-handed reliever Sean Reid-Foley from the 15-day injured list to the 60-day injured list. SRF was placed on the injured list in June with a right shoulder impingement and had been working his way back recently on a rehab assignment before being shut down after an August 13 outing.
Azócar, 28, has a career slash line of .243/.287/.322 with 17 doubles, three triples, two home runs and 18 stolen bases in 214 major league games for the Padres over the last three seasons.
On defense, Azócar has eight outs above average in the outfield while playing all three spots. His sprint speed this season (29.0 ft/s) is in the 91st percentile, and his sprint speed (29.6 ft/s) in 2023 was in the 97th percentile.
Azócar was optioned to Triple-A Syracuse to begin his career in the Mets organization.
