Barbados Royals Girls Cricket Club to train with their CPL counterpart
The Barbados Royals Girls Cricket Club will engage in a joint training session and a five-over-a-side match alongside the Barbados Royals Caribbean Premier League (CPL) franchise next Monday at the recently refurbished Kensington Oval.
This collaborative initiative, which begins at 4:30 p.m., targets the next generation of female cricketers in Barbados, offering them a rare opportunity to train and compete with professionals from the Barbados Royals CPL team.
Roland Butcher, President of the Barbados Royals Girls Cricket Club, expressed his excitement ahead of the event, noting that it offers an invaluable opportunity for the club’s young players. “We are thrilled to host this joint training session and match with the Barbados Royals CPL team. This is a fantastic opportunity for our girls to learn from some of the best cricketers in the region and to showcase their talent. It’s not just about the skills on the field; it’s about inspiring these young athletes to dream big and aim high in their cricketing careers. We are grateful to the Barbados Royals for their continued support in developing women’s cricket in Barbados,” Butcher said.
Chief Executive Officer of the Royals Sports Group, Jake Lush McCrum, reinforced the organisation’s commitment to nurturing young talent. He highlighted the group’s dedication to inclusivity and the development of women’s cricket. “We are delighted to support the Barbados Royals Girls Cricket Club and are committed to empowering young female cricketers in the Caribbean. This event underscores our dedication to nurturing talent and promoting inclusivity in cricket. The enthusiasm and passion shown by the young players are truly inspiring, and we are excited to see them in action alongside our CPL team. Together, we are working to build a stronger foundation for women’s cricket in Barbados and beyond,” McCrum explained.
Barbados Royals captain Rovman Powell echoed these sentiments, emphasising the importance of mentorship and experience-sharing. “It’s a privilege to be part of this initiative and to engage with the young talents of the Barbados Royals Girls Cricket Club,” Powell remarked. “This event is not just about playing cricket; it’s about mentorship, sharing experiences, and encouraging these young players to pursue their cricketing dreams. The event will conclude with a presentation ceremony to celebrate the participants and foster a spirit of camaraderie and learning.
The Barbados Royals began their CPL 2024 campaign with a convincing nine-wicket win over the newly formed franchise Antigua & Barbuda Falcons at the Sir Vivian Richards Stadium in Antigua last Sunday. South African batsman Quinton de Kock was player of the match due to his unbeaten knock of 87, which included nine boundaries and five sixes. (JC)
