Roy Keane says he still has ‘question marks’ over senior Tottenham star

Roy Keane says James Maddison has a big season coming up, with the attacking midfielder needing to respond in the right manner after being left out of the England squad for the Euros in the summer.

Watching England in Germany, Maddison may have felt that he could have injected much more creativity into the side, with Gareth Southgate’s men struggling to fashion opportunities for much of the tournament, even though they made it to the final.

In the three matches so far this season, the 27-year-old has played like someone with a point to prove, producing the sort of enterprising and energetic displays we saw from him prior to his injury last year.

Spurs fans will be hoping that the England international can sustain this form through the season as he remains the side’s main creative fulcrum.

Roy Keane still has question marks on Maddison

Keane believes that the former Leicester City man needs to step up over the coming months and backed him to produce the goods.

The Man Utd legend told Sky Sports Football (01/09/24 at 1:00 pm): “I have still got my question marks over Maddison, particularly, away from home. There are always question marks over him.

“He has had a couple of disappointments in the last few months with England. But if you give him time and space. If Son is making runs in behind – that’s up to Spurs to get some decent possession and use his intelligence.

“All he needs is one or two opportunities to get on it – I still think there is more to come from Maddison. That’s where he needs to show his personality. He has had his disappointments, every player in their careers will have setbacks. It’s how he deals with it. The next few months are going to be big for him.”

Maddison is entering that age where great players kick on and take their game to the next level and the attacking midfielder certainly has the right team around him, with Tottenham’s system built to suit his strengths.
