Faneromeni ’24 fest to feature dance inspired by Varosha, myth of Europa

0

As part of Bank of Cyprus Cultural Foundation’s (BoCCF’s) Faneromeni ’24 Art Festival, the musician Vangelis Gettos (lute, drums, samples, background music) and Italian dancer Erika Guastamacchia, will perform ‘Seeking Europe-Varosha 2024 AD on Thursday, September 12, 2024.

Under the guidance of Italian choreographer Giulio De Leo, a multi-layered dance spectacle will unfold, with live, on-stage music and video art, featuring film clips inspired by Varosha, with allusions to the myth of the Abduction of Europa.

We come from different shores of the Mediterranean, from landscapes that chase each other like the waves of the sea, like a game of mirrors. In our journeys we oscillate between east and west, between conflicts and hopes, between horror and beauty. Akin to Europa’s four brothers, who set out west to seek her, we, too, navigate the sometimes turbulent, mysterious waters and coasts of the Mediterranean.

On the island of Cyprus, divided by war, whose first city, Nicosia, is Europe’s last divided capital and where our research began, we, too, oscillate between south and north. We cross the buffer zone that divides the island into two, south and north; we cross the checkpoints, going up and down, again and again in an endless search for Europa. Oscillation seems to be the only possible movement in the Mediterranean Sea.

Similarly, the performance music on September 12 will keep the audience in a constant oscillation between the stage and the abstract level of the video art the group created especially for the show, interspersed by scenes of Varosha, this unique place full of meaning, where war’s reverberations, 50 years later, are still powerful.

Thus, the dance will appear to oscillate among the ruins of the ghost city, as if to search for Europa and, with her, the beauty that is still possible.
