Spurs star is ‘hungry as hell’ after being named new captain of his country
Dejan Kulusevski is hungry to be part of a successful new era of Swedish football after being made captain of the national side.
A new era of Swedish football
On paper, Sweden have an extremely talented side, with several experienced stars as well as talented youngsters coming through the ranks, such as Tottenham’s Lucas Bergvall.
However, despite the star power they have, the Scandinavian nation have underperformed over the last couple of years, even failing to qualify for the Euro 2024.
They are now starting a rebuild as they embark on a new era under manager Jon Dahl Tomasson, who took over the job earlier this year. As one of his first big decisions, the 48-year-old has decided to hand the captain’s armband to Kulusevski.
Dejan Kulusevski named Sweden captain
The 24-year-old, who has been capped 39 times by his country, will lead them out for the first time in their Nations League clash against Azerbaijan in Baku this afternoon.
The Tottenham star admits he is raring to go and that he is taking the leadership responsibility very seriously, as he and his teammates look to turn a corner after their recent disappointments.
Kulusevski told Sport Bladet: “I feel ready and hungry as hell. I take it very seriously. I think that as team captain you have a little more responsibility.
“It’s not about you, that you should come here and do your thing, but take care of everyone so they feel good. And on the pitch, you have to take responsibility and be the bravest of all.”

Even though Kulusevski is only 24, he already has plenty of experience at the highest level and the winger is a natural leader, who almost demands the most from himself and those around him.
