90s child star Kate Maberly from The Secret Garden has hardly aged a day since her starring role aged 10
KATE Maberly shot to fame as ten-year-old orphan Mary Lennox in 1993 film The Secret Garden.
Now three decades later, the actress has hardly aged a day from her starring role opposite Dame Maggie Smith.
The movie was a remake of the 1949 version and an adaptation of Frances Hodgson Burnett’s cherished 1911 novel.
While it’s a tale many of us remember, it was also the beginning of Kate’s flourishing career.
The star went on to appear in several movies, including 2004’s Finding Neverland and TV movie Gulliver’s Travels.
She also made appearances in A Touch of Frost and Midsomer Murders.
After taking time off from acting to study at the prestigious Trinity Laban Conservatoire of Music and Dance, Kate Maberly earned a degree in Classical Piano and Cello.
She has since channelled her musical talents into writing and recording her own compositions.
In 2011, Maberly starred in 1066, a historical drama centred around the events leading up to the Battle of Hastings.
She then appeared alongside Val Kilmer in the film Standing Up, a coming-of-age drama based on Brock Cole’s novel The Goats.
Kate was named one of Variety’s 10 Brits to Watch in 2017.
Now 42, the star has taken a step back from acting to focus on filmmaking, directing, and writing.
Despite her evolving career, she told Vulture that she is still most frequently recognised by fans for her role in The Secret Garden.
She said: “Still now and again if I’m buying Starbucks. Which is nice.
“It’s generally girls who were around the same age that you were when you saw it, and they say that it saved them. I love that.
“Because it’s always a lovely recognition, like, ‘That film meant a lot to me.’ I always take it as a big compliment.”
