What’s on this weekend
Hello September, hello new season of events! To welcome the first weekend of September, which often feels like the start of the year in many ways, the cultural agenda brings an array of festivals, plays, opera performances and concerts.
The first event of the weekend that cannot be omitted is, of course, Ed Sheeran’s concert in Cyprus. Across two evenings, the popular musician will sing in front of Cyprus audiences for the first time. The Land of Tomorrow in Larnaca will host the two shows this Saturday and Sunday and believe it or not, a few tickets are still available.
Also in Larnaca, Maroni village will host the 3rd Maroni Street Food Festival on Saturday at its two squares and Agiou Georgiou alley. From 5pm onwards, the village centre will fill with food stands and pop-up stalls selling items and local delicacies while live cooking demonstrations take place. MasterChef finalist Christina Christofi will create unique recipes for visitors to taste. Live music, song and dance will add to the evening’s cheerful atmosphere as local artists take the stage.
In Paphos, the return of the Pafos Aphrodite Festival will finally happen this weekend with a remarkable performance of the opera La Traviata in front of the Medieval Castle square. On Friday and Saturday night, the Tbilisi State Opera, a group from the Tbilisi State Ballet and the Cyprus Symphony Orchestra will present Giuseppe Verdi’s masterpiece.
Also happening this weekend are several festivals. The 1st MountainFest will take place in Agros on Saturday with info stands by youth organisations, and local groups, talks with ministers and live performances. In the mountains, the Pame Troodos festival with highlight the island’s traditional flavours and handicrafts, inviting guests into the Presidential Residence in Troodos for the first time. For something a bit more upbeat and late night, the Sunset Tribes Festival is also on this Friday and Saturday at Ithaki Beach in Moni. Over 70 DJs will play on five different stages across the two days featuring ten genres of underground and electronic music for those who want to party it up this weekend.
