Cyprus a ‘strategic hub’ for regional evacuations

Cyprus plays a key role in the execution of many peacekeeping missions, especially those concerning humanitarian issues in the eastern Mediterranean, according to Defence Minister Vasilis Palmas.

Speaking at the annual training seminar organised by the Joint Rescue Coordination Centre (JRCC), Palmas said that Cyprus has become “a strategic hub for providing high-level Search and Rescue (SAR) services, particularly through the contribution of the JRCC”.

Palmas highlighted the country’s geopolitical and strategic importance, adding that Cyprus’ role has been elevated in light of recent developments in the region.

He stressed that Cyprus is consistently proving to its international partners that it can fulfil and execute its responsibilities effectively and acknowledged JRCC’s professionalism and dedication of the services involved in SAR operations, “contributing to the state’s positive image and reinforcing the country’s role in international humanitarian efforts”.

Palmas also commended JRCC’s consistent high level of readiness in monitoring, coordinating and executing missions contributing to the national ‘Estia’ plan, which is used to safely evacuate civilians from high-risk areas.

“By 2025, the JRCC will have completed 30 years of uninterrupted service, particularly in safeguarding lives at risk from aviation and maritime accidents,” Palmas said. “Over the past two decades, it has significantly enhanced its capabilities, successfully responding to all incidents within its jurisdiction.”

He also referred to the complex security environment following the conflict in Gaza and recent developments, stressing that the JRCC remains a central pillar of regional cooperation and a model for other countries looking to establish similar national centres.

Palmas further highlighted the advantages of the ‘Zenon’ Coordination Centre at both national and international levels, citing the example of the evacuation and repatriation of nationals from 36 countries from Israel following the events of October 7, 2023.

“As the JRCC approaches its third decade of service, it continues to innovate and strengthen its capabilities to meet modern challenges,” Palmas said, adding that the defence ministry will keep supporting the JRCC “in every possible way, as it remains a key tool for advancing national interests”.
