WATCH: THIS Sunrisers Hyderabad Batter Sets New World Record In Australia Win Over Scotland

0

Former T20 world champions Australia made a massive statement in their win over Scotland in the first T20I in the three-match series at the Grange Cricket Club in Edinburgh on Wednesday (September 4). On their way to scoring this seven-wicket win with 62 balls to spare, Australia set a new record of smashing the most runs in the Powerplay by a Test playing nation, scoring 113 runs for the loss of one wicket in the first six overs.

Romania hold the record for scoring the highest number of runs in Powerplay – 116 runs vs Serbia in a T20I match in 2021 but Australia now hold the record among Test playing nation beating South Africa’s 102 runs vs West Indies in a T20I match in Centurion in 2021.

The architects of the carnage in Edinburgh were Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) opener Travis Head, who hammered 80 off just 25 balls with 5 sixes and 12 fours and Australian skipper and all-rounder Mitchell Marsh, who scored 39 off 12 balls with 3 sixes and 5 fours.

After Australia lost the wicket of debutant opener Jake Fraser-McGurk for a duck in the opening over, chasing 155 to win, Head and Marsh hit top gear to pulverise the Scots. Marsh was dismissed of the first ball of the 6th over by when 113 runs were already on the board.

SRH opener Head, who scored 567 runs in IPL 2024 with 1 century and 4 fifties and a strike-rate of 191.55, went berserk and started dealing with boundaries. Scotland players spent their time chasing the ball towards the boundary. He struck 20 off Brandon McMullen, but the real assault was saved for Jack Jarvis. Skipper Mitchell Marsh tonked three sixes and conceded 30 runs in the fifth over.

Josh Inglis provided the finishing touches with his 27 not out off 13 deliveries to wrap up the game with more than ten overs to spare. Australia achieved the win with 62 balls to spare which is the biggest in the history of T20Is while chasing a total of more than 150.

“Nice way to get underway, we’ve loved our time here so far and I was a bit nervous coming in. Nice to get some runs with the captain today. It’s been a nice couple of years, I’ve been enjoying the environment under this coaching staff, loving the atmosphere with the youngsters coming in,” Head said in the post-match presentation.

“After losing Jake, not sure what the wicket was going to do, but nice to get into my groove quickly. Once I get away, I guess that’s my role, maximising the powerplay,” he added.
