Gautam Gambhir’s Coaching Mantra: Yashasvi Jaiswal Reflects on Their SL Series Conversations
Yashasvi Jaiswal, a young opener for India, made a fantastic start to his international career last year and has since emerged as one of the top prospects in cricket globally. The left-handed hitter became the second-fastest Indian to reach 1000 runs in Test cricket, behind only Vinod Kambli (14 innings), in just 9 Tests (16 innings).
The 22-year-old made a splash in the cricket world when he struck for a century in his Test debut against the West Indies, but his series win against England cemented his status as the game’s next big thing. He outperformed established professionals like Rohit Sharma, Joe Root, Ben Stokes, and others, smashing 712 runs in the five-match series.
Many have also been impressed by the daring opener’s free-flowing batting in Twenty20 Internationals. During his 23 T20I matches for India, he amassed 723 runs at an incredible strike rate of 164.32.
Despite not having played in an ODI yet, he is still a strong candidate to be included in India’s squad for the Champions Trophy the following year.
The 22-year-old talked candidly about his experience playing under the new head coach, Gautam Gambhir, saying that the coach gives players complete support, which he claims encourages them to play their natural style.
“Yes, I have spoken with him during the Sri Lanka series. He really backed us saying just go out and play freely and enjoy the game and we will be with you. It gives us a lot of confidence and helps us to play fearlessly,” Jaiswal told PTI.
The left-handed batter said he wanted to use Duleep Trophy as a training platform to hone his skills ahead of the upcoming two-match series against Bangladesh.
“I am working hard at nets ahead, first for the Duleep Trophy and then for the Bangladesh series. It’s not about setting personal goals, as you know in cricket you have to be consistent and keep working on your skills.
“Playing in domestic tournaments like the Duleep Trophy and Irani Trophy helps me prepare for those (international) games and gives me a lot of confidence,” he stated.
“I make an effort to stay in my comfort zone and help the team win. Prior to a Test series, it is highly beneficial for you to play such competitive games and you can learn a lot from competitions like the Duleep Trophy,” he continued.
