Health Crisis Hits India-Born Ireland Cricketer Simranjit Singh: A Community’s Support

The cricket player is presently in the intensive care unit at Medanta in Gurugram due to abrupt liver failure. The hospital is waiting on a liver transplant procedure for the off-spinning middle-order batsman.

Simi, a successful U-14 and U-17 representative for Punjab, was born in Mohali, Punjab. However, she was not selected for the U-19 team. In 2005, he left for Ireland with the goal of becoming a hotel manager. Simi had no idea that cricket would also follow him to Ireland.

He became a professional player in 2006 and joined Dublin’s Malahide Cricket Club.

Parvinder Singh, Simi’s father-in-law, who is among those providing the cricket player with basic care, informed TOI about Simi’s health. “Simi got a weird type of fever that came and went when he was in Dublin, Ireland, maybe five-six months ago. There, he had himself checked out, but the examinations revealed nothing definitive. Parvinder recounted the family’s suffering and added, “The doctors there said they couldn’t find the underlying cause so they wouldn’t start medication.”

“The process was getting delayed and Simi’s health was deteriorating, so we decided to get him treated in India for ‘better medical attention’. Simi flew to Mohali in late June, and after a few consultations with various physicians his treatment started in PGI, Chandigarh in the beginning of July. There the line of treatment was taken for TB (tuberculosis) and antibiotics were given to him. Later, results came out that he didn’t have TB.

“We brought him to a private hospital in Mohali for a second opinion as his fever didn’t go down. There, we were informed that Simi did not have tuberculosis but that the six-week medication regimen needed to be finished. He was also administered steroids in addition to the TB medications. Subsequently, he experienced a rise in temperature and severe jaundice. We brought him back to PGI during the final week of August, and he was admitted to the ICU.

However, his condition continued to worsen, and the PGI doctors discovered that he was suffering from severe liver failure. They said there was a good chance Simi might go into a coma and then it wouldn’t be possible to do a transplant, therefore we should transport him to Medanta, Gurugram.

On September 3, we arrived at Medanta.” Simi is currently awaiting a liver transplant procedure at Medanta. Agamdeep Kaur, his Dublin-based working professional wife, has consented to donate a portion of her liver.

Simi is fortunately an AB+ blood type, which indicates that he is a universal receiver.

According to the physicians, he will have no trouble matching with his wife. According to a close family friend, Simi’s transplant is anticipated to take place very soon, and the doctors are optimistic that it will be successful and provide him a fresh start.

In recent years, Simi has emerged as one of Ireland’s top cricketers. After making his debut for Ireland in 2017, the 37-year-old has participated in 35 One-Day Internationals and 53 T20 Internationals.

He has 44 T20I wickets and 39 ODI wickets, with the career-high 5/10 figures.

He has achieved an ODI century at bat against South Africa, where he faced up against a bowling attack that included players like Tabraiz Shamsi, Keshav Maharaj, and Anrich Nortje.
