Major Topeka intersection to close for months

TOPEKA (KSNT) - A major intersection in the capital city will be closed for months.

Starting Monday, Sept. 9, the intersection of Southwest 21st Street and Southwest Topeka Boulevard will be closed for six months. This closure is due to a waterline replacement project and pavement reconstruction, according to the City of Topeka.

The following signed detour routes will be posted for drivers to follow:

  • NB Topeka Blvd. – from 29th St. and Topeka Blvd., east on 29th St. to Kansas Ave., then north to 12th St., then west to Topeka Blvd.
  • SB Topeka Blvd. – from Huntoon St. and Topeka Blvd., east on Huntoon St./12th St. to Kansas Ave., then south to 29th St., then west to Topeka Blvd.
  • EB 21st St. – from 21st St. and Washburn Ave., south on Washburn Ave. to 29th St., then east to Kansas Ave., then north to 21st St.
  • WB 21st St. – from 21st St. and Kansas Ave., south on Kansas Ave. to 29th St., then west to Burlingame Rd., then north to 21st St.

The intersection will be closed to all vehicular traffic. The city is reminding drivers to not cut through private property or business access to go around the construction zone. According to the city, construction is expected to wrap up in early January 2025.

This construction comes as other stretch of Southwest Topeka Boulevard is closed for a waterline replacement project until Sept. 27, 2024.
