Will Smith has backed out of a starring role in a forthcoming movie shortly before it was expected to enter production.

The 55-year-old Oscar winner was supposed to appear in an action movie called Sugar Bandits, which is based on the novel Devils in Exile by Chuck Hogan. However, he is now only attached to the project as a producer alongside his production company Westbrook.

According to reporting by Deadline, Will had to exit the role due to “scheduling conflicts.”

The outlet noted that the company hopes to proceed with the movie, but there are questions on if backers will be interested in the movie without Will at the helm.

Here’s a synopsis of the movie: “Oscar winner Smith was to play a former special forces soldier who runs an elite vigilante squad working to wipe out the drug trade in Boston.”

No other actors are attached to the project yet. However, Stefano Sollima had been tapped to direct.
