Club president reveals Spurs are not the only club interested in his midfielder

0

Real Betis president Angel Haro reveals that over the course of the summer, many clubs expressed interest in midfielder Johnny Cardoso, who Tottenham now have the option to buy next year.

Giovani Lo Celso to Real Betis

While Giovani Lo Celso’s deadline day switch to Betis did not come as a surprise, the specifics of the deal did catch people off guard, with the Lilywhites reaching an unusual agreement with the Spanish side.

As part of the deal to take the Argentine to the Benito Villamarin Stadium, Betis reportedly agreed to offer Spurs an option to buy midfield starlet, Cardoso, who had been one of the finds of last season in La Liga.

According to reports, Ange Postecoglou’s men can sign the 22-year-old in the summer of 2025 for a fee of around £21m-£25m (Pepe Elias).

Some sources even suggest that should Spurs not activate that option, they would get a sell-on clause on the USA international, even though they have technically never owned the player (Football.London).

Spurs are not the only ones looking at Cardoso

Haro has now explained that Cardoso has a lot of admirers, many of whom were keen to sign him.

The Beits president told Mundo Deportivo: “Johnny is a player that interests not only Tottenham but many other teams, he has a great projection.

“In this case, within the Gio operation, they asked us for an option to buy for a value that for us was important and interesting and we gave them that option.”

Meanwhile, the La Liga club’s sporting director Manu Fajardo told ABC Sevilla about the agreement with Spurs: “Johnny’s performance is extraordinary. He’s going to bring a lot of joy to Beticismo. Tottenham has a purchase option in amounts that will satisfy Betis if they occur.”

£21m to £25m is a sizable fee for someone who has essentially just had six good months at the highest level.

However, if Cardoso sustains the same level of performance this season, his value will skyrocket up to around £40m, which would make Tottenham’s agreement look very shrewd.
