Apalachee High School on lockdown over active shooter in Georgia as casualties reported at Barrow County campus

MULTIPLE people have been injured in a devastating high school shooting that saw dozens of cops swarm the campus, police say.

Casualties have been reported and a suspect arrested after a shooter opened fire at Apalachee High School in Barrow County, Georgia — 58 miles northeast of Atlanta — Wednesday afternoon.

At least two people have reportedly died and four more were injured in the shooting, according to NBC.

However, police have yet to confirm these figures.

The U.S. Sun has contacted the Burrow County Police Department for an update.

AT THE SCENE

Heavily armed cops and SWAT vehicles surrounded the school on Wednesday morning after students were evacuated and seen rushing into their parent’s arms.

A helicopter landed in the middle of the school lawn and then took off.

At least two people were seen being loaded onto a stretcher outside and flown to the hospital.

Grady Memorial Hospital in Atlanta confirmed it was treating one gunshot victim, per NBC.

Dozens of cops from different agencies drove their cars onto the lawn of the school.

There were also at least a dozen ambulances and firetrucks.

FBI Atlanta said they were aware of the incident and its “agents are on scene” helping law enforcement.

Students and staff flooded the bleachers of the football stadium as the school was evacuated at 11:33 am.

Another helicopter flew around the school as students stood in the stadium.

Large armed groups of cops stood on the lawn while others started to approach the school.

Apalachee High School

Apalachee High School is in Barrow County — 58 miles northeast of Atlanta, Georgia.

The school has about 1,9000 students and is one of two high schools in the school district.

Students returned from summer break on August 1.

Buses are available for students who need transportation home.

Other campuses of Barrow County Schools went into a “soft lockdown” during the shooting, per NBC.

‘PRAYING FOR SAFTEY’

The governor of Georgia Brian Kemp released a statement about the shooting on X.

“I have directed all available state resources to respond to the incident at Apalachee High School and urge all Georgians to join my family in praying for the safety of those in our classrooms, both in Barrow County and across the state,” he wrote.

“We will continue to work with local, state, and federal partners as we gather information and further respond to this situation.”

White House Senior Deputy Press Secretary, Emilie Simons, said President Joe Biden was alerted about the shooting.

“His administration will continue coordinating with federal, state, and local officials as we receive more information,” she wrote.

Apalachee High School has about 1,900 students and is one of two high schools in the Burrow County school district.

It has been a little over a month since students returned from summer break.
