Report: Player moves to Saudi Arabia in £17.7m deal two years after leaving Spurs
Just two years after leaving Tottenham, Steven Bergwijn makes the move to Saudi Arabia, but the transfer has not gone down well in his native Netherlands.
Steven Bergwijn struggled at Spurs
Bergwijn spent two and a half years at Spurs after joining from PSV Eindhoven in January of 2020, and the winger may feel that he never quite got the opportunities he deserved at the North London club.
Back in the summer of 2022, the Netherlands international returned to the Eredivisie, sealing a €31.25m (£27m) move to Ajax. The wide-man has not quite managed to deliver what was expected of him since his switch to the Johan Cruyff Arena.
There have been suggestions over the last 12 months that Bergwijn could return to the Premier League, with West Ham credited with an interest in the player (De Telegraaf).
Steven Bergwijn joins Al-Ittihad
However, it now turns out that the former Spurs man has made the move to Saudi Arabia instead after Al-Ittihad struck a deal worth €21m (£17.7m).
It appears this transfer has already backfired for Bergwijn though, as Netherlands manager Ronald Koeman put an end to the winger’s international career this week.
Koeman said (Daily Mail): “Steven Bergwijn goes to Saudi Arabia at the age of 26. It’s clear that this has nothing to do with sporting ambition.
“His book with the Dutch National Team is closed.”
Spurs Web Opinion
There were some murmurs of discontent among Tottenham fans when the club sold Bergwijn but with hindsight, Spurs did brilliantly to get the fee that they did for the winger, whose career has only gone downhill since then.
