UN Secretary-General appoints new political deputy for UNAMA in Kabul

0

The United Nations has announced that António Guterres, the organization’s secretary-general, has appointed Georgette Gagnon as the new Political Deputy of UNAMA in Kabul.

According to a statement released late Tuesday, September 3rd, Ms. Gagnon has worked for many years in peace, human rights, humanitarian assistance, and development in conflict-affected countries.

Georgette Gagnon, a Canadian diplomat, replaces Markus Potzel, the former Political Deputy of UNAMA.

Ms. Gagnon previously served as the Director of Human Rights at the UN Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA) in Kabul from 2010 to 2015.

She obtained her bachelor’s and master’s degrees in international law from York and Essex Universities in Canada and the UK, respectively.

Georgette Gagnon’s appointment as the Political Deputy of UNAMA in Kabul comes as the Ministry of Promotion of Virtue and Prevention of Vice of the Taliban has cut its cooperation with the United Nations.

Ms. Gagnon’s extensive experience in peace and human rights will likely be instrumental in addressing Afghanistan’s ongoing challenges. Her previous work with UNAMA and academic background equip her for this critical role.

Despite the recent suspension of cooperation between the Taliban regime and the United Nations, Ms. Gagnon’s appointment underscores the UN’s continued commitment to addressing Afghanistan’s complex issues and supporting its path toward stability and development.
