Former T20I world champions Australia led by all-rounder Mitchell Marsh will go up against Scotland in the first T20I of the three match series at Edinburgh on Wednesday (September 4). This will be the first time that Australia will be taking on the Scots in a bilateral T20I series as the previous clashes were one-off encounters in 2009 and 2013 apart from T20 World Cup meetings.
The last time the two sides faced off in a T20I match in Scotland, former captain Aaron Finch hammered 148 while Shaun Marsh smashed 151 in a massive 200-run win in 2013. But Aussie skipper Mitchell Marsh is not taking the Scots for granted this time around.
“Scotland are a good cricket team and they’ve improved a lot over the last little period of time. They’re well drilled … and they’re going to provide a good challenge for us, so it’s going to be a great series,” Marsh said on the eve of the first T20I match.
Since Australia’s last tour to Scotland some 11 years back, Scotland have qualified for the past four T20 World Cups, as well as the 2015 ODI World Cup, claiming wins over England and West Indies along the way.
“Since (2013) we’ve managed to gain a lot of experience in World Cups playing against some of the bigger teams, some of the Test nations, and managed to pick up a few wins along the way, which has given us a lot of confidence and belief as a cricketing nation,” Scotland captain Richie Berrington said.
“We do play a lot of high-pressure games, often there’s a lot on the line to win the game, so we are used to that. But against the bigger teams the margins get even smaller,” he added.
