Pentagon: US will continue efforts to counter ISIS threats in Afghanistan

The Pentagon responded to the recent ISIS suicide attack in Kabul by stating that the ISIS-Khorasan branch remains a significant threat.

General Ryder, a Pentagon spokesperson, told media that Washington will take appropriate measures to address this threat.

On Tuesday, ISIS claimed responsibility for a deadly suicide attack targeting employees of the former Attorney General’s Office in Kabul. ISIS asserted that the attack resulted in over 45 casualties.

According to a statement from the Taliban’s Ministry of Interior, at least six people, including one woman, were killed, and 13 others were injured in the attack.

ISIS reported that the suicide bomber waited for the employees to exit through the main gate before detonating the explosive vest.

In a press conference in Washington on Tuesday, the Pentagon spokesperson emphasized that ISIS continues to be a threat, including its Khorasan branch and other affiliates.

He added that the United States will take appropriate actions to counter this threat in collaboration with its allies and partners.

Previously, a U.S. Defense Department spokesperson had stated that the U.S. would strike if it detected an “imminent threat” from ISIS-Khorasan.

General Ryder noted that without pressure, ISIS could potentially grow again.

Addressing the threats from ISIS in Syria and Iraq, he stated that the group is not as strong as it was a decade ago but emphasized that the threats posed by ISIS must be taken very seriously.

The Pentagon’s remarks highlight ongoing concerns about ISIS’s capability and intent to carry out attacks, stressing the importance of sustained vigilance and countermeasures.

As the situation evolves, it is clear that both regional and international efforts are crucial in combating the persistent threat posed by ISIS and ensuring the safety and security of affected areas.
