BROOKLYN, N.Y. (PIX11) -- Five people were shot along the route of the West Indian American Day Carnival in Brooklyn on Monday.

Marius Sirju was one of the victims. "I thought I was going to die," Sirju said.

Sirju showed PIX11 News the gunshot wounds on his back and arm. "It scared the devil out of me," Sirju said.

The 64-year-old native of Trinidad and Tobago was enjoying the parade with his family and friends when shots rang out.

Sirju's sister-in-law was also hit by a bullet. The 69-year-old woman spoke with PIX11 from her hospital bed and sent a plea to the gunman.

"Put the guns down. You come to the party to have a good time. No need for violence," the woman said.

Denzel Chan, 25, died after he was shot in the abdomen. His uncle Emanuel Dover said his nephew was a good young man and the family is devastated.

Chan's family is from Guyana. They started the day on Monday cooking and getting ready to have fun at the parade, but now they have to plan a funeral.

Dover said everyone in the family is crying over Chan’s death. He said his nephew was in the wrong place at the wrong time.

Police are still searching for the gunman. The shooting is believed to have been targeted, NYPD officials said.
