Ridley Scott opened up about Gladiator 2 and his decision not to reach out to franchise star Russell Crowe for input on the long-awaited sequel.

If you were unaware, the 60-year-old actor won an Oscar for his portrayal of Maximus in the 2000 blockbuster. However, he is not one of the original cast members who was brought back for the sequel, which stars Paul Mescal.

In a new interview, Ridley reflected on working with Russell and not bringing him on in any sense for the new movie.

During an interview with Empire, Ridley said that the plot of the movie was “right under our nose,” via Screen Rant.

“I think it was so close under our noses that we thought it was too simple. I think [Russell Crowe] is still one of the best actors in the world, and I think we have a good relationship. I hope we do. As long as he doesn’t start b-tching about how he wasn’t consulted. Why would I? He’s dead,” he continued.

Gladiator 2 arrives in theaters on November 22. Check out the first trailer!

Earlier this year, Russell explained why he was “uncomfortable” with the movie being made.
