Introducing The Kanji Awards

Welcome to the Kanji suite of Coach Assistant awards.

The three awards have been created to primarily help 10 – 14-year-old members to be able to assist coaches in their club activities. The three awards separately cover the assisted delivery of the key components of a judo education session, officiating an event and refereeing matches, all done and supported by the lead coach.

The education modules for the three disciplines can be run in whatever combination suits the individual club requirement – the programme is versatile enough to fit bespoke requirements in most clubs. Some clubs may choose, for example, to invite an Official or Referee to assist in module delivery for the Officiating and Refereeing sections.

Kanji Assistants are expected to be relaxed about taking part in their new environments as it is intended that the Club Coach will deliver the applicable training to them or be present when others do so. The training is flexible enough to be dissected in parts that suits any club needs or venue constraints.

The training is designed to be easily deliverable by a Club Coach as it supported by British Judo loaning all the necessary equipment to be able to do so. The equipment comes with preloaded presentation material and tutor guidelines to help the Coach to stay on track whilst delivering. The equipment pack can be loaned from British Judo Head Office free of charge by simply contacting Chris Wynn.

Patchway Judo Club have been one of the first clubs to introduce the Kanji Awards into their club environment and have embraced the opportunity across their young people in all three disciplines and they are now assisting their coaches by delivering parts of the education sessions and events to others in the club.

The adult Coach always remains in control and has overall responsibility, but the Kanji Assistants are the ones delivering the elements they are comfortable to do so, this takes the strain off the lead coach to physically do everything themselves.

It is envisaged that the young assistants will form part of British Judo’s future licenced level coaching, officiating and refereeing staff and become the lead themselves in later years. British Judo hope they will fondly recall where they started and promote this to future generations of clubs and event volunteers.
