NFL Today: Let the Season Begin
Jacoby Brissett has won the QB battle in New England; KC has released WR Kadarius Toney, but GM Brett Veach does not regret acquiring him in 2022; and Jets WR Mike Williams (knee surgery) has been cleared to play in the season opener.
Tyreek Hill Ready for Week One
You may recall that the Chiefs insisted they didn’t miss wide receiver Tyreek Hill — and the things he did (see video below) — after dealing him to Miami. And considering KC has won back-to-back Super Bowls, apparently he was not needed.
However, when you look at how Hill has taken his game to a completely different level with the Dolphins — recording back-to-back seasons of at least 1,710 yards receiving — it’s small wonder that Miami gave him yet another raise, he’s among the top two WRs off the board and he could very well be the second player taken in your draft.
Still, it could be a sluggish start for Hill as he was dealing with a thumb woe that has caused him to miss practice the past couple of weeks and had him listed as questionable for the season opener (which is against Jacksonville, who boasts a very strong pass D). He returned to practice on Monday and laid to rest any doubts he’d play in the opener, so it sounds like his absence last week was more precautionary than anything else.
Hill was grabbed in the fifth round in 2016, but the fact that he was drafted at all was somewhat surprising given his history of violence, one that has followed him into the pros and made him a tough pill to swallow from time to time. It was clearly a factor when the Chiefs opted to trade him.
Best Fantasy Option On the Chargers?
The Los Angeles Chargers finally snapped their playoff drought in 2022, but last season went right back in the tank, winning just five games. They’re expected to be better this season, likely winning at least six games, and perhaps as many as nine or 10.
But Fantasy-wise, the pickings are a bit slim. Quarterback Justin Herbert is a solid QB2, Gus Edwards is at best a low-end RB3, Ladd McConkey is a bottom of the barrel WR4, and tight end Hayden Hurst might be a bye-week streaming option.
Surprisingly, the top Fantasy asset on this roster may be place kicker Cameron Dicker. He’s a top 10 option coming off a career year that included drilling a franchise record seven field goals of 50 yards or more.
Small wonder that L.A. just gave him a new four-year, $22.04 million deal.
Dicker’s longest ever field goal is 55 yards, so we’re not sure that he’ll be the one to crank a 60-yarder in Week One, but FanDuel odds suggest it’s +300 for someone to do it.
RotoRob Tune of the Day
English musician David Sylvian is best known as the leader of Japan, but has also enjoyed a prominent solo career. He’s been at it since 1974, and in 1984 released his first solo effort, Brilliant Trees. From this album comes “Nostalgia.”
