Greene Co. hosts hazardous waste collection event Saturday

ATHENS, N.Y. (NEWS10)-- Greene County Solid Waste Management will be holding a Household Hazardous Waste collection event on Saturday, Sept. 7 from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at the Greene County Highway Department, 67 Scott Lane. The event is open to only Greene County residents, with proof of residency required.

In an effort to reduce wait times, residents are asked to come to the highway department in hour increments based on the first letter of their last name. The time slots for the last names A-G are 8:30 a.m. to 9:30 a.m.; for H-M, 9:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m.; for N-S, 10:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m.; and for T-Z, 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

Participants will be asked to stay in their cars, during the duration of the event, while being directed through the site. Waste materials and accepted items will be unloaded and handled by the contracted workers.

Items should be separated and packaged to prevent any leakages during transportation. The Solid Waste Management team will determine if any waste brought to the event is unacceptable or should be brought back to the transfer station at another time.

  • Acids and Bases
  • Automotive fluids, except motor oil
  • Chlorine
  • Cleaning Products
  • Driveway Sealer
  • Fluorescent Light Bulbs
  • Gasoline and Kerosene
  • Paint
  • Paint Removers and Thinners
  • Pesticides
  • Swimming Pool Chemicals
  • Weed Killers
  • Wood Stains

Unaccepted Items:

  • Reactive materials, Explosives and Ammunition
  • Fireworks, Flares and Gunpowder
  • Agricultural and Commercial Waste
  • Empty Aerosol Cans
  • Empty Paint Cans
  • Prescription Medication and Syringes
  • Propane Tanks
  • Smoke Detectors
  • Batteries
