CROWN HEIGHTS, Brooklyn (PIX11) – Five people were shot near the West Indian American Day parade in Brooklyn Monday afternoon, police said.

The shooting happened along the route of the parade on Eastern Parkway near Franklin Avenue in Crown Heights around 2:45 p.m., according to the NYPD.

A man walked up to the crowd and started shooting, police said. It's unclear what led up to the shooting, but police said it wasn't random.

"This was an intentional act by one person toward a group of people," NYPD Chief of Patrol John Chell said. "We do not by no means have any active shooter, or anything of that nature, running around Eastern Parkway as we speak."

Four men and a woman were shot, police said. Two of the victims were hospitalized in critical condition, authorities said.

The shooter has not been arrested.

The West Indian American Day Carnival, an annual celebration of Caribbean culture and pride, is being held in Brooklyn on Monday.

The parade is marching west along Eastern Parkway, officially starting at Schenectady Avenue and ending at Grand Army Plaza.

Submit tips to police by calling Crime Stoppers at 1-800-577-TIPS (8477), visiting crimestoppers.nypdonline.org, downloading the NYPD Crime Stoppers mobile app, or texting 274637 (CRIMES) then entering TIP577. Spanish-speaking callers are asked to dial 1-888-57-PISTA (74782).
