Report: Tottenham’s total net spend actually wasn’t that high this summer
Tottenham Hotspur had a rather modest net spend this summer when one considers all the players sold, even with huge signings like Dominic Solanke for £65m.
How much did Tottenham spend this summer?
Spurs’ squad was extremely bloated coming into this summer and the club thus needed to oversee a mass clear-out, which they managed to do successfully.
Eric Dier, Ivan Perisic, Ryan Sessegnon, Japhet Tanganga, Joe Rodon, Tanguy Ndombele, Troy Parrott, Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg, Bryan Gil, Emerson Royal, Oliver Skipp, Manor Solomon and Giovani Lo Celso all departed Hotspur Way.
Meanwhile, Dominic Solanke, Archie Gray, Wilson Odobert and Yang Min-Hyuk were added to the side while Lucas Bergvall, who was signed back in January, also linked up with the squad.
Tottenham’s gross and net spend
All in all, Tottenham spent a total of £138m on new recruits this summer. Here is the breakup:
Solanke = £65m
Gray = £40m
Odobert = £30m
Yang = £3m
Meanwhile, Spurs’ coffers were boosted by £83.9m thanks to player sales and other deals. Here is the breakup:
Joe Rodon = £10m
Troy Parrott = £6.7m
Emerson Royal = £12.8m
Oliver Skipp = £25m
Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg = £17m
Jack Clarke = £4m (sell-on clause)
Giovani Lo Celso = £8.4m plus add-ons
That means that overall, Tottenham have a net spend of just £54.1m. However, Football 365 gives a much higher figure, putting Spurs’ net spend at £79.65m this summer, which is one of the highest in the Premier League. Sky Sports have the figure at around £70m but we believe they may not have included Hojbjerg’s loan with an obligation to buy deal.
That could be down to the fact that they have not taken Hojbjerg’s fee into account, with the obligation to buy only being automatically activated next summer.
According to Football 365’s figures, Tottenham have the fourth-highest net spend across the Premier League over the last five years, having shelled out a total of £458.78m in that time, just £11m less than their North London rivals, Arsenal.
Spurs Web Opinion
The complaint from some Tottenham fans on social media does not seem to be about the amount of spending but rather about the players we have spent the money on.
However, Ange has made it clear that the likes of Solanke, Odobert and Gray are players that he wanted, which is why one cannot accuse the club of not backing the Australian.
