Vote now: Bay Area News Group girls athlete of the week

Editor’s note: We prohibit the use of bots and any other artificial methods of voting. Suspicious activity could lead to the disqualification of candidates and a permanent suspension of the Athlete of the Week poll. No voting by email: Votes by email and after 5 p.m. Wednesday are not counted.

Welcome to the Bay Area News Group (Mercury News & East Bay Times) girls Athlete of the Week poll.

For the entire academic year, we will provide a list of candidates who stood out over the previous week and allow you, the reader, to vote for the winner.

This week, we consider performances from Aug. 26-31.

Polls close at 5 p.m. Wednesday.

Vote as many times as you’d like until then without using bots or any other artificial methods of voting.

Votes by email and after 5 p.m. Wednesday are not counted.

Winners are announced each Friday online and in the print edition of the Mercury News and East Bay Times sports sections.

Candidates for future Athlete of the Week polls can be nominated at highschools@bayareanewsgroup.com.

We accept nominations until 11 a.m. each Monday.

We also review stats submitted to MaxPreps by coaches/team statisticians.

On to the nominees:

Ava Allen, Menlo School flag football: Allen, a sophomore quarterback/defensive back, threw for 85 yards and a touchdown while also rushing for a TD. She also had a pick-six in Menlo’s 34-6 win over Aragon. 

Lalo Asoufua, Deer Valley flag football: Asoufua, a freshman quarterback, completed 12 of 16 passes for 68 yards and threw two touchdowns in the Wolverines’ 13-0 victory over Foothill-Sacramento. 

Kali Fewkes, Hillsdale water polo: Fewkes, a senior, scored two goals and dished out one assist in a close loss to Homestead last week. She’s coming off a season where she netted 29 goals. 

Remy Gapasin, Heritage water polo: Gapasin, a senior, scored six goals in the team’s victory over Benicia. She also had three steals. The senior scored nine goals last season. 

Chloe Gilber, Castro Valley water polo: Gilber, a junior, scored three goals and had two assists in the the Trojans’ 13-4 victory over Newark Memorial.

McKayla Hsu, Fremont-Sunnyvale volleyball: Hsu, a senior, served six aces in 24 attempts in the Firebirds’ victory against Prospect. She had four digs vs. Prospect, and five digs against Westmont. 

Symone Jewell, Northgate flag football: Jewell, a sophomore, was a true dual-threat against Dougherty Valley. She threw for five touchdowns and 227 yards, and rushed for 72 yards in a 25-6 victory. 

Zoe Lichaa, San Mateo flag football: LIchaa, a sophomore, had a big game on defense against Mercy-Burlingame. She had a sack and an interception in the 36-6 victory. She also had three receptions for 18 yards and a touchdown. 

Abby Michaelsen, Leigh field hockey: Michaelsen, a senior, scored a goal and had an assist in Leigh’s 3-0 victory over Stevenson. She scored 17 goals and had 12 assists last season. 

Ariana Simms, Silver Creek volleyball: Simms, a junior, led Silver Creek with seven kills. She also had seven digs and three aces in a victory over Piedmont Hills.
