‘Wants me to be positive’ – Brennan Johnson reveals what Postecoglou has told him
Brennan Johnson admits that Tottenham Hotspur have to be a lot more ruthless and decisive in the final third if they are to come away with wins from places like St James’ Park.
Tottenham taste defeat at Newcastle
It was the same story for Spurs on Sunday as it was two weeks ago at the King Power Stadium, with the Lilywhites dominating proceedings but failing to make their advantage count.
Newcastle predictably made Tottenham pay, scoring on the break on 78 minutes to consign the North London club to their first defeat of the season.
The same problems continue to plague Spurs in the final third and Johnson, who came off at half-time, admitted that the attacking players have to take responsibility for not making their opportunities count.
The winger told Sky Sports following the 2-1 loss: “Yeah really disappointed. I think in the first half we were decent and created a few chances. Our general play wasn’t too bad. In the second half, we came out well and pushed them back. It’s about doing what we can with the chances we created. We have to be more clinical.
“I definitely think it’s just responsibility on us guys. We are getting into good areas. It’s probably our final ball. It’s about creating the right chance.
“There were a few opportunities today where we could have shot and not pass, then others when we could have passed and not shot. It’s disappointing to concede in that manner too.
“I think it’s hard. The manager always wants me to be positive. It was the perfect opportunity to come out and be fearless. We started really well in the second half. I thought I did well when I came on but we had to see the game out and get three points today.”
Johnson says Tottenham are still adapting
Spurs whipped a lot of crosses around the six-yard box but lacked a natural penalty box poacher to turn those home, with both Dominic Solanke and Richarlison being sidelined with injuries.
When asked if those are not the kind of chances that Son Heung-min thrives on, Johnson responded: “Nobody will complain about putting Sonny [Son Heung-min] up front because he can score an amazing amount of goals.
“I wouldn’t put it on that. There’s no excuses on that front. I think it’s about adapting to what guys we have up front and creating the right chances.”
Spurs Web Opinion
As expected, there has been a massive overreaction on social media to the result. St James’ Park is an extremely difficult place to go and not a lot of teams will go there and play as well as we did yesterday. The result could have been a lot different had Solanke been fit for this game.
