‘Just switched off’ – Roy Keane blames three Spurs players for Newcastle goal
Roy Keane accuses the Tottenham players of completely switching off and losing their bearings for Newcastle’s first goal on Sunday – naming and shaming James Maddison, Cristian Romero and Radu Dragusin in particular.
How are Tottenham only on four points?
The Tottenham players and Ange Postecoglou will be wondering how they managed to lose the game at St James’ Park, having been in control of the encounter for large parts.
It was the same story at the King Power Stadium two weeks ago, with Spurs once again wasteful in the final third and being punished by the opposition. This time, they do not even have a point to show for their efforts, with the Magpies emerging with a 2-1 win.
The defending for the second goal left a lot to be desired, with Newcastle slicing through Tottenham with just one through ball.
Roy Keane is not happy with Tottenham’s defending
However, Keane noted that the away side’s defending for Harvey Barnes’ 37th-minute strike was just as concerning, with the pundit questioning what the Tottenham centre-halves were doing when the cross was played into the box.
The pundit told Sky Sports’ coverage (01/09/24 from 14:15): “Really poor quality in the game but the finish is brilliant, lovely first touch. But the Spurs players, it’s just their body language, they just switch off for the throw and you see, they’re having a breather at the wrong time.
“They get some bodies back but they’re all in the one line, and I’m always asking when the ball comes in towards the middle of your box – where are your two centre-halves?
“Maddison has got to do better but it’s the two centre-halves, you see a couple of Spurs players there waving their arms up in the air – forget about that lads, someone get out to it. They just switch off for a split second.”
Spurs Web Opinion
One thing that cannot be disputed is that our defensive organisation in open play has not been great under Postecoglou. We are very open at the back and our defenders are often caught out of position when we lose the ball.
